Philippines Reports First Mpox Case Since December
Health Officials Announce New Infection in 33-Year-Old Filipino Male
No Recent Travel History, Close Contact Identified
The Philippines has reported a new case of the mpox virus, the first in the country since December 2022.
The Department of Health (DOH) announced on Monday, August 19, that the patient is a 33-year-old Filipino male with no recent travel history outside the Philippines.
The patient is currently isolated and receiving treatment. Contact tracing is underway to identify and monitor any potential close contacts.
Symptoms of Mpox
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Back pain
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Rash
Transmission of Mpox
Mpox is transmitted through close contact with an infected person or animal. Transmission can occur through:
- Direct contact with the rash or bodily fluids of an infected person
- Contact with contaminated objects, such as bedding or clothing
- Respiratory droplets from an infected person's cough or sneeze
Treatment for Mpox
There is no specific treatment for mpox. Treatment is supportive and includes:
- Antiviral medications
- Pain relievers
- Fluids
Prevention of Mpox
The best way to prevent mpox is to avoid contact with infected people or animals. Other preventive measures include:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and water
- Avoiding contact with contaminated objects
- Getting vaccinated against mpox
