Kamala Harris Announces 2024 Presidential Campaign
Current Vice President Announces Bid for Presidency
Harris enters crowded Democratic field
Kamala Devi Harris, born October 20, 1964, is an American politician and attorney who is the 49th and current vice president of the United States since 2021 under President Joe Biden. On July 21, 2024, after President Biden withdrew his bid, Harris announced her 2024 campaign for president.
Harris was born in Oakland, California, and is a graduate of Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and later served as the San Francisco District Attorney from 2003 to 2011. In 2010, she was elected as California's Attorney General, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold the position.
Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, becoming the second African American woman to serve in the Senate. She was a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Harris was a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and his policies.
In 2020, Harris ran for president as a Democrat. She was considered a top contender for the nomination but eventually dropped out of the race. She was later chosen by President Biden to be his running mate, and they won the election in 2020.
Harris's announcement of her 2024 presidential campaign was met with mixed reactions. Some Democrats welcomed her entry into the race, while others expressed concerns about her record as a prosecutor. Harris is facing a crowded field of Democratic candidates, including former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Senator Elizabeth Warren.
