Erviti and Gallopin End Careers at Monument Classics

Pogačar Claims Third Monument Victory

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Il Lombardia 2023, outsprinting Andrea Bagioli (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) in a thrilling finale.

The race took place on a challenging 238km course from Como to Bergamo, featuring several iconic climbs including the Madonna del Ghisallo and the Muro di Sormano. Pogačar attacked on the final climb, the San Fermo della Battaglia, and held off a late charge from Bagioli and Roglič to take the victory.

This is Pogačar's third Monument victory, after winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2021 and 2022. The 24-year-old Slovenian is now one of the most successful riders in the peloton and will be a favorite for next year's Tour de France.

Meanwhile, Imanol Erviti (Movistar) and Tony Gallopin (Trek-Segafredo) both announced their retirements from professional cycling after competing in Il Lombardia. Erviti spent his entire 19-year career with Movistar, serving as a loyal domestique for the team's star riders. Gallopin enjoyed a successful career that included stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España.

Il Lombardia 2023 was a fitting end to the 2023 cycling season, with Pogačar cementing his status as one of the greatest riders of his generation and Erviti and Gallopin bowing out after long and distinguished careers.
