Brazil's hopes of securing a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup took a setback on Friday as they were held to a goalless draw by Costa Rica.

The South Americans dominated possession and created more chances, but they were unable to find a way past a resolute Costa Rican defense. Vinicius Jr. thought he had won a penalty in the second half when he went down under contact in the box, but the referee waved away his appeals.

Brazil will now need to beat Serbia in their final group game to guarantee a place in the last 16. Costa Rica, meanwhile, will be hoping to cause another upset when they face Germany.
