UN General Assembly Condemns Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

143 Votes in Favor, 5 Against

African Countries Respond

The 145th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Kigali, Rwanda, has adopted a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In an interview with The New Times Kigali, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Rwanda expressed his gratitude for the support of the international community. He emphasized the need for continued pressure on Russia to end the war and respect international law.

The Government of Rwanda has also issued a statement, calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. It acknowledged the impact of the war on African countries, particularly in terms of food and energy security.

According to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), African countries heavily rely on imports of wheat from Russia. The conflict has disrupted supply chains and led to price increases.

Many African countries, such as Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eritrea, Kenya, and Rwanda, also depend on Russian arms supplies. The war in Ukraine has raised concerns about the availability of these weapons in the future.

The Government of Rwanda maintains that the long-term solution to the crisis lies in the hands of Russia. It calls for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with 143 votes in favor and only 5 against. African countries played a significant role in this outcome, demonstrating their commitment to international peace and security.
